In Grace Hawthorne's newest book, she weaves a thoroughly enjoyable story and even sneaks in a slice or two of history as she goes. But the characters she created to populate her fictional Dawsonville, Georgia are the ultimate stars of her novel. After reading Thunder and White Lightning, I feel I know these people. They are my people. People whose steel could only have been forged from red clay in the shadow of the North Georgia Mountains. They are as Southern and as rich as my grandmama's fig preserves and as tough as the callouses on my granddaddy's hands. Thanks Grace. Thunder and White Lightning was a great ride.
Hard times require ingenuity. Author Grace Hawthorne provides the reader a different perspective about moonshiners and racers - determined individuals who are independent, yet connected by loyalty, commonality, enthusiasm. and compassion. Her characters have symbiotic relationships that drive them forward, supporting one another with genuine affection, self-sacrifice, and grit. Tenacious women gave of themselves to help hard-working men with secluded stills and powerful engines to achieve a better future for all.
I just finished Thunder and White Lightning by Grace Hawthorne and having some early first hand knowledge of the two subjects in the title, I must say that she did a great job telling the story, as usual! I really enjoyed it. Brought back a lot of memories. The characters, real and fictitious, come to life from the pages of this book.R. Kemp
Grace is an excellent story teller. The character development is very well done. The book is a fun read. My husband and I both enjoyed it. It's great to read a book that doesn't find it necessary to use nasty language and sex to sell the story.
One would expect a book about moonshine and NASCAR to be peopled with strong, resilient men. In Thunder and White Lightning, Grace Hawthorne has also given us strong, multi-dimensional women who embrace the traditional roles of wife and mother while being fearless about "poking the box." With wry humor and meticulous research, Hawthorne gives us a history of moonshine, NASCAR and little known tidbits of WWII such as the Red Ball Express and the Fighting Quartermasters. I particularly enjoyed the courtroom recitation of the history of the Scots-Irish immigration to northern Georgia. Who knew truth could be so much fun?Once again Hawthorne has produced an entertaining, informative story peopled with engaging characters.
Exciting story of Dawsonville families making and selling moonshine in N. Ga. The cars, reworked for speed, led to the beginnings of track racing and eventually NASCAR! The very interesting characters carry the story through World War II, polio, all the challenges of mountain living and the events that led to the forming of the sport so many love today. My read was for pure pleasure, I knew nothing of the running of white lightening...but really appreciated the combination of reality and fiction. I got to know the characters and felt them as friends...hoping for good fortune, fearing for their safety, feeling their sadness and joys. Think it could make an interesting movie with its inclusion of war and life back home.
Having been in Georgia law enforcement for a number of years, our problem was not drugs, but moonshining was. The author knows her business; this is exactly as it was. Georgia was a pretty dry (non-alcohol) state in those days, and bootleggers were able to make a decent living off 'shine likker. We'd catch them, they'd go to prison and back in business after their release. I couldn't top this book with any of my tales of street policing and moonshinin' in Georgia.
