A nice combination of theory and experiment.Physicist Sidney Borowitz remarks: "...beautiful monograph,emphasizes how a physicist learns general principles by analyzing the simplest problems.." (reference: Page 316, Quantum Mechanics Text).Editorial statement: "...to give newcomers an understanding..." and "...to survey achievements..." (preface),indicating the scope of this enterprising publication.(1) The classic exposition authored by G.W. Series "Spectrum of Atomic Hydrogen" (c.1947,roughly 80 pages), is here reprinted in full, comprising the first Part of this book. This serves as an introduction to all else which follows; elementary quantum mechanics is prerequisite.This first part present an interesting assessment of the state of experiment and theory at that time. A pleasant read.(2) The second Part, bringing events to date as of 1988, it is a much harder read. Even so, each of the chapters/papers provide enough descriptive summary to give a glimpse even to the neophyte in these matters.(3) Some of these papers are gems: QED Calculations ( by Mohr), Hydrogenic Systems in Electric and Magnetic Fields ( by Gay), Hydrogen and Fundamental Atomic Constant (by Series),Those three papers are my favorites.(4) Other Papers Include : Advances in Experimental Methods, Transitions and Electroweak Theory,Radio-frequency and Optical Spectroscopy and Temperature Dependent Lamb Shifts.All fascinating for enrichment.An interesting endeavor and quite worth perusal.
