About the Author
Dr. David S. Goodsell is Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA, USA. His illustrations have become well known and now appear in many publications as the primary demonstration of the crowded nature of cells. He has also provided expertise and illustrations to many science museums, most recently acting as a "thinking partner†for a new multi-site nanotechnology initiative headed in part by the Exploratorium in San Francisco.

This book is great. The pictures are not only intellectually interesting, they are also pretty to look at. The scale is indicated for each of the colorful pictures which enables comparisons. It also goes into what I think is the right amount of depth for a popular science book. It uses common vocabulary, yet without watering down the concepts. I learned a few things from this book that I didn't know or think about. The writing is awesome. The writing is more than a book about biology, it is a celebration of life.
Fantastic way of displaying the complexity of cellular processes by respecting scientific guidelines.For somebody who is very visual, it is astounding to be able to "see" with how much minuscule detail our inner world, the "beast", is arranged. Unimaginable how much time and "trial and error" it must have taken to reach such a stage of perfectionism (valid in short term for Mr. Goodsell, and in long term for nature).
This book was a useful introduction to molecular biology, written in a way that a layperson could understand. I like how the author laid out the molecular framework of the cell and illustrated the functions of parts of the cell at the molecular level. I feel the illustrations he used weren't as effective on the kindle. I wish the kindle had included the illustrations in full color as they had been produced in the original book. I also wish the author had employed a different metaphor instead of 'machinery' to describe the cell at its molecular level. An organic metaphor would have been better. However, the author did not overwhelm the reader with data and wrote in a manner so that someone without much background in biology could understand the subject matter of the book.
Goodsell's ultra-dense watercolor paintings show life at the bottom, innumerable proteins ratcheting and whirring and cleaving and sintering molecular grist to make...everything alive. He is a fantastic science communicator and his awe at the nano-mechanical parts of biochemistry shines through. It might be hard to chew through if you're totally new to biology, but I still recommend it to anyone who'll listen.
Excellent book. This book does an awesome job of describing cell biology by telling a story and not just listing facts, pieces, parts etc. The author is able to balance story telling style and providing details. If only all biological textbooks had these pictures, we'd all understand their concepts better. I can't recall how many classes I took in college where the concepts were taught with conceptual drawings only; it was just too hard for me to understand and envision concepts twice removed from reality. Now comes along a new artform that can accurately depict images at 1,000,000 to 40,000,000 times original and more. I purchased this book for the pictures and understanding the scale differences between concepts, knowing that the functions of depicted organelles and other items weren't going to be elucidated. I'm a grad student in organic chemistry and I work on "artificial molecular machines". It is very impressive to look at the machines that nature developed in the past billion years. Well written book. With my little biology knowledge I have no difficulty appreciating the concepts in the first half of the book that I just finished. I just met someone major in bio-science and apparently this book is just entry level for biologists.
I have two version of this. An older softcover and the electronic version. The book shows how the cell is made from it's constituent parts, the molecules, and it shows how the molecules work and interact to form the machinery of the cell. It's a book i constantly reference so that I can get a picture of what is going on in the cell.If you want to understand cellular biology, this book and Uri Alon's Introduction to Systems Biology book and videos on youtube are indispensable.
