As a Francophile and wanna be adoptive child of the Sud Ouest, Walker's books remind me of the wonders of this part of France. Complexity is difficult to pull off with any Vintage book -- hey, they're intentionally short! -- yet even by the standards of previous Walker Vintage books this is sadly deficient. Essentially, it is a shopping expedition and reintroduction of "friends" with a cooking lesson: if the expertise of Walker's spouse, Julia, as he has previously been quoted as saying, contributes to the portions relating to Bruno's cooking, I'm guessing it is a book combining his style and characters with her expertise. This thin gruel of a novella won't stop me from reading future Bruno books, but it leaves a bad taste on top of Walker's often-present English prejudices regarding France.
I love Bruno's cooking, but for the price charged for a short story (25 pages), it would have been nice to have the actual recipes. Quite frankly, I feel that I got a third degree burn at the stove for purchasing these few pages. Was this a marketing stunt or a need to make ends meet? Not enough there to warrant purchasing.
Bruno has always spent time describing every meal he is eating or cooking, and they all sounded delicious. Now he tells us how the magic happens in great enough detail that preparing one of his favorites would be fairly easy. Very different from the other books, of course, but well worth reading.
Lovely. I enjoyed spending time with Bruno, Balzac, and their friends and neighbors. A leisurely day or two with a birthday celebration at its center. If you love this series, don’t miss this story with Bruno cooking and sharing a bit of local archaeological information.
I love Bruno and have read the entire series so naturally I bought this small story. I'm not much of a cook though. Wish I could taste the results rather than just reading about them. Nothing at all in the way of a plot.
A lovely gentle story about food and friends and celebrating both. I enjoy reading about his meals, especially the preparation thereof....very different from the way my mother cooked and we ate.
I think he may do these when he runs across an interesting fact or 2 that he can’t fit into whatever he’s working on at the moment. I hope no one reads these little works and thinks they are representative of the wonderful Bruno series.
Usual well done tale of interesting people in interesting spot--with wine and food delights. But prefer the novels; these "shorts" are good but only whet my appetite!
