Janet Hogan Chapman, Ed.D. aka GeorgiaJanet The Bohemian Southern Belle Dr. Chapman was born, raised, and lived all her life in Georgia. Growing up in Atlanta in the 1960s could be wonderful, traumatic, exhilarating, and frightening. It was all of those things at some point or another. This book was really fun to read mainly because May was such a fun character and she is based on a real person. She was a strong, feisty, independent lady way before it was cool. Unfortunately, she is also pretty impetuous and vindictive and usually working on the wrong side of the law which makes her story pretty interesting. I also like the Atlanta ties and the historical information about the city. The book ended at a good spot but left me ready to find out what happens next...sequel.
This book was so interesting, it kept my interest until the end. I am from Atlanta and it was interesting reading about it at the turn of the century. When I finished the book, I wanted to know more about what happened to May. I hope that Ms. Chapman will write a sequel soon.
This tale of Atlanta at the turn of the 20th century, seen through the eyes of Madam May is a delightful look at life in the deep south during an interesting time in U.S. history. Miss May lived a life of madness, morphine and mayhem, with a twist of humor and engagement the author has brought her great grandmother to my living room for a cup of tea and a few laughs. I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful book.
This was a really good book and a quick read. I haven't sat down and read a good book in awhile and after reading this one it has made me want to sit outdoors and escape through a good book. I loved the character Madam May and thought she was a very fiesty gal that was always trying to make a buck in some fashion or form. I was born and raised in Georgia so therefore it was pretty cool to read the book with that in mind.
Very good read and kept my interest going .Looking forward to the next escapades of Madame May ! Thoroughly recommend.
What a fun engaging read this was! I love seeing history through another's eyes- May and Maude were thrown together in a time and place when women didn't have many options- so they made their own opportunities - I also love the history of Atlanta woven through the story- knowing that much of the story was based on facts and research made it all the more interesting! I look forward to the sequel!!!
I enjoyed reading about May and all her antics and I especially enjoyed reading about turn of the century Atlanta. The characters are so interesting and seem to come alive on each page. I highly recommend this book and hope that Janet will write a follow up soon.
Enjoyed very much. Would like to know what happened in later years. As book was written by granddaughter, there was at least one child. So there's more story to tell.
