Louis L'Amour is rightfully famous as a writer of westerns (both novels and short stories), but some critical reviewers have noted differences between Leisure editions (such as this) and Random/Bantam editions of his works. Here's the reason for those differences:L'Amour's early magazine output was carelessly allowed to lapse into the public domain. That meant anybody could -- and STILL CAN -- freely publish those works without permission and without paying L'Amour or his estate any royalties; these are the unauthorized stories published by Leisure Books (and others). This may seem very unfair, but it IS legal. To counter this, L'Amour rewrote many of those early works. In doing so, some short stories were expanded into novels and some longer works were shortened; sometimes the original title was retained and sometimes a new one was created. These "new" versions were (and still are) copyrighted, and these (along with all subsequent works L'Amour wrote) are the authorized ones published by HIS publisher, Random/Bantam.Of course, this can easily lead to confusion, such as when readers come across an unauthorized short story and an authorized novel bearing the SAME title, or when readers discover virtually the same story, one authorized and one not, under two DIFFERENT titles. In this book, for example, "The Rider of the Ruby Hills" was lated expanded to become "Where the Long Grass Grows." Both versions, of course, are "real" Louis L'Amour, but which is better? The answer to that essentially depends upon which one you prefer; each is good and enjoyable in its own way. Obviously, L'Amour preferred his authorized versions, because only these generated income for him; the rewrites also permitted him the opportunity to make some corrections and improvements, and to generally display a more mature (but also a more self-indulgent) writing style free from the editorial constraints originally imposed on him by the magazines in which his stories first appeared.I personally enjoy the slightly more perfected, authorized Random/Bantam editions (if only on principle), but I also have read many of the unauthorized Leisure Books editions, and I will generally take Louis L'Amour any way I can get him. Either way, his works are great fun to read, and the two tales in this book are typically entertaining. But the book's highlight is (arguably) the lengthy and illuminating foreword by John Tuska. However, you may have already read this (or a version of it) in other L'Amour Leisure Books you may own; if that is so, about 20% of this book will be redundant.By and large, this is a satisfying little package -- but there ARE better and larger collections of L'Amour westerns available, including THE COMPLETE COLLECTED SHORT STORIES OF LOUIS L'AMOUR: VOLUMES 1-7 from Random House. (5 of the 7 volumes, labeled "Frontier Stories," consist of westerns; the other 2 contain "Crime" and "Adventure" stories). That is priced at a whopping $49.99, but if you were to purchase myriad smaller collections instead, at two or three dollars apiece (and often higher), you would probably spend even more than that and have a great many duplicates, so buying it may actually be the most economical route to choose. After acquiring that set of all his short stories, you can then concentrate on locating and purchasing his many great novels. Rather than doing so in hit-or-miss fashion, I would recommend you first purchase one of his authorized novels from Random/Bantam; then use the book-list within it as a check-list for future purchases. Use that list (being careful to avoid any short story collections appearing on it, since they are all in the 7v set) and stick to the authorized editions; doing so will provide a higher level of consistency and fewer (if any) unintended duplicates. But however you may choose to obtain your Louis L'Amour westerns, you are in for many pleasant hours of great entertainment.

“It is this by which we measure a man, by what he does with his life, by what he creates to leave behind,” – Louis L’Amour. These words describe perhaps better than any the essence of noted western author, Louis L’Amour, the man who set the standard for the western genre. The Sixth Shotgun by Louis L’Amour, edited by Jon Tuska, contains two of L’Amour’s most famous works, the short work from which the book gets its title, ‘The Sixth Shotgun,’ a tale about a stagecoach robbery and frontier justice, that details in pithy passages the course of justice in many frontier towns of the Old West. The longer work, ‘The Riders of the Ruby Hills,’ is one of L’Amour’s typical range war novels, with lone hero, Ross Haney, facing off against gangs of killers and ne’er-do-wells, while contending for the hand of the fair maiden. For fans of westerns, Tuska’s editorial notes, giving L’Amour’s biography and discussing his writing style, are fascinating. The fact, for instance, that L’Amour’s novels were often written in first draft with no editing before publication, leading to inconsistencies and errors, was something I was not aware of. Especially considering that the short stories he wrote for pulp magazines were strenuously edited. That said, L’Amour’s stories still stand the test of time. They are full of action, vivid descriptions, as well as his trademark hard-nosed philosophy. This one is a must-read for western fans.

I totally enjoyed these stories! I'm more of a novel reader, but these several stories were entertaining and fun to read. And face it, fun is important, otherwise why read. There didn't seem to be any inconsistent passages or unbelievable events (ex: shotgun with twenty shots without reloading), which make a story much more believable and trilling. You will enjoy these stories.

It took me quite a while to read my way through a long introduction before reaching L'Amour's two short stories or rather one short story and one longer novella. Initially I thought I had bought a literary criticism rather than L'Amour's works but keep reading and you will eventually get there. I really enjoyed the first short story and also liked the second story included in this book. I had not read Louis L'Amour before and like his style. He paints the picture of life in the early west, with both its noble characters and its bad apples. I enjoyed the dialog; it seemed authentic to me. The plots were interesting, but mostly it was the descriptions of the western topography and way of life that I found most compelling. Highly recommend this book.

In this novel L'Amour follows his frequent pattern of of big ranchers fighting for total control of an area while threatening to swallow up a smaller ranch in the process. What makes this one different is the intrigue going on in the background. There are a couple of good fight sequences but the most interesting part for me is the courtroom drama that gets played out near the end of the story. I think that the final wrap-up was a little weak an could have been written better, but all in all, I think it's another good western from the Master story teller.

I would give this a 5 star review (after all, it is a L'Amour), and I would, but for one reason., The editor of the book spends about 20% of the book telling everything that L'Amour did wrong in his books. I bought the book to read L'Amour, not a critic of his work.I enjoyed the stories that were in there from Louis. But I could have done withour what I saw as self-serving nit-picking cricial comments about L'Amour's writings.
