Brilliant. But scarring. On the upside, this book answers some profound questions about human nature, while often misrepresenting evil as a "force" of some sort. The author mercifully concludes with the observation that good precedes evil, and is the natural state. And I believe this to be correct.On the downside, some depictions are heart-wrenching, and I wouldn't recommend the book to sensitive souls. I know that I will not be able to forget some of the things I read in this book.For everyone else with an interest in psychology, this wonderful biographical journey will probably prove as moving as it is insightful.
This is a solid read, although perhaps with not quite as much detail on specific case histories as I would have preferred, personally. This is a first-hand depiction of the development of behavioral science and the field of criminal profiling, alongside the personal and professional life of the author. A little ways into the book, Depue begins to interweave key case histories -- some in gripping detail, others in a more cursory fashion -- including one unsolved case that follows and gnaws at him through his entire career. A recommended read for anyone interested in criminal profiling, and the personal sacrifices requested of the men and women who make it their calling.
I enjoyed the books by John Douglas and Roy Hazelwood, both had interesting takes on the development of criminal profiling. Each had edge of your seat accounts as well as a good dose of self confidence bordering on egomania. This book was different in that the author is more of a self confident person, strong enough to share the spotlight and even to redirect it to another agent. In my opinion, the unit would never have been as successful without such a leader.This is not strictly an analysis of crime scenes etc. It is the background information that anyone who has read about FBI profiling would be interested in.
Great 'auto-biography' about the life of Roger L Depue. The way he is presented in this story is as an outstanding role model for teens and boys. Good solid character, and wise. It is also a sobering reminder that evil does exist in this world. Well written, and deep.
What an excellent book. Besides what has already been said, it is extremely well written and not self-indulgent in the least. It is easily as good as John Douglas's books and maybe better, from a different standpoint. It's more autobiographical, as opposed to a case by case study. For those of us who enjoy this subject, you won't be disappointed.
First heard this on an audiobook, and bought the paperback so my husband could read it as his leisure. A fascinating story about an interesting man's career path.
